Fujitsu launches cloud website for dog pedometer service

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Japanese multinational company Fujitsu launched a website for a dog pedometer which allows customers to monitor their dog’s health online. The device measures data while attached to the dog’s collar. Customers are also able to add more data to the website manually, then it displays the complete set of data graphically. Fujitsu launched the website today (Tuesday) and plans to start the sales in Japan tomorrow (Wednesday).

The pedometer is called “Wandant”, from Japanese “Wan” equivalent to “woof”, and the “dant” of “pendant”. The latter refers to the pedometer, because it is attached to a dog collar. The users can transfer data to an Android phone using a touch-card to make it available online.

Fujitsu said Wandant would be the first cloud-based dog health-care service.

The data include walking, temperature, and shaking motion statistics. The users can manually enter additional data such as food quantities, weight, custom notes, and photos.

Fujitsu said, “The data are presented graphically on a custom website that makes trends in the dog’s activities easy to understand at a glance. This helps owners get a stronger sense of their dog’s health, while enabling communication with the dog.”

Australian PM subject to scrutiny over Carer and Senior’s payments

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd faced intense scrutiny in federal parliament on Tuesday following days of speculation that he was considering scrapping cash bonuses to recipients of carer and seniors payments. Questions by the opposition during question time were dominated by the cash bonuses, with leader of the opposition, Brendan Nelson moving to censure the Prime Minister.

It was the first censure motion moved against the Prime Minister since his election last year.

For the past four years, the previous Howard government had made one-off payments to seniors of up to $500 and $1,600 to carers.

Facing repeated questions, the Prime Minister said “I guarantee that carers will not be one dollar worse off as a consequence of the budget”.

Mr Rudd said that the government was also looking at “the challenges of carers and pensioners in the long term” instead of through one-time bonus payments as the previous government had. Mr Rudd then called the opposition the “new party of compassion” and told the house that the Howard government had never committed to the payments in the long term, as they were not in forward budget estimates.

Brendan Nelson then moved a motion to censure the Prime Minister over his plans. During his motion, Dr Nelson called upon the Prime Minister to “get up, for God’s sake, get up, stand in front of that microphone and say to the carers of this country, ‘I, the Prime Minister of Australia, believe in you and will deliver you a lump sum payment in the budget.”

Dr Nelson also accused the Prime Minister of not seeing the significance of the bonus payments for those who receive them. “For someone earning $250,000 a year, a lump sum payment of $1,600 would probably make them think: ‘What’s that? It’s my credit card payment or whatever.’” said Dr Nelson.

The opposition leader told the House of Representatives that many people had been budgeting for the bonus payment and it was unfair for it to be taken from them. “If you are hanging out for that lump sum payment, it is absolutely essential for your budgeting,” said Dr Nelson.

When the Prime Minister spoke against the motion, he reminded the opposition that a Liberal party document said “A re-elected Coalition Government will consider continuing to pay these bonuses, depending on the economic circumstances at the time.”

Mr Rudd then drew attention to his $500 utilities allowance, which will be paid to aged and disability pensioners as well as carers to counter the rise in the cost of living.

Speaking for the motion, opposition community services spokesman Tony Abbott accused the Rudd government of “compassion fatigue” and said that the cardboard cutout of the Prime Minister which appeared in parliament on the previous sitting day had “more heart than this Prime Minister”.

The censure motion was defeated along party lines.

Former Formula 1 designer unveils new electric car

Monday, November 9, 2009

Former Formula One McLaren designer Gordon Murray has unveiled a new all-electric car.

The car model, which is known as the T.27, is due to be developed over the course of the next 16 months with four prototypes. The process that will be used during the course of the manufacturing of the vehicle is called iStream. The technology iStream had been invented by Gordon Murray in 1999 and means that all the parts are designed using a computer.

The project has approximately received £9,000,000 (US$14,919,000) in investment. The electric car is designed for urban purposes, such as in cities or towns. The weight of the vehicle is just 600 kilograms. It has the ability to travel at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and can go for a maximum of 100 miles between recharges.

The designer thinks that motorists will some day be travelling in vehicles like this. Murray believes that the new car will be ‘the most efficient electric vehicle on earth’.

Murray Hill on the life and versatility of a New York drag king

Monday, November 19, 2007

Drag—dressing in the clothing atypical of your born gender—in recent years has found mainstream success. Films such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar have prominently featured drag performers. But they have all focused on men in drag as women.

Murray Hill is a comedian, emcee and performer. He is also a drag king. Called “The Hardest Working Middle-aged Man in Show Business”, The New York Times christened him “the current reigning patriarch of the downtown performance community.” He is seemingly everywhere, emceeing a bingo night at the now closed, Jimmy Fallon-backed Mo Pitkins’ House of Satisfaction on Avenue A, or hosting the Polyamorous Pride Day in Central Park. Hill has become a legend in New York’s “anything goes” counterculture theater scene who is beginning to find mainstream success; which would be a first for a drag king.

David Shankbone’s examination of New York City‘s culture has brought him to the whip’s end of a BDSM dungeon, on the phone with RuPaul, matching wits with Michael Musto, grilling Gay Talese, eating dinner with Augusten Burroughs and quizzing the bands that play the Bowery Ballroom. In this segment he talks to downtown legend Murray Hill, former New York City mayoral candidate and comedian, on the last night of Mo Pitkins’ House of Satisfaction.

Eight Californians seriously ill after eating live shellfish

Saturday, September 9, 2006

Eight Californians contracted a rare lung infection after eating live sawagani crabs at several southern California restaurants.

The freshwater crabs, also known as river or regal crabs, were purchased in several restaurants, including Riptide Rockin’ Sushi & Teppan Grill in Mission Viejo and Chomp Rockin’ Sushi & Teppan Grill in Fullerton. The crabs were infected with a parasite called paragonimus, a flatworm similar to lung fluke.

The parasite travels to the lungs six to ten weeks after ingestion. Symptoms include coughing, diarrhea, breathing problems, chest pain, abdominal pain, fever, and hives. The worm can spread to other organs, including the brain.

According to Wikipedia, about 5,000 Americans die of foodborne illness every year.

Oil price reaches new high

Thursday, May 22, 2008

At US$135 a barrel, the price of oil today reached a new high. BBC News has reported that this recent increase is due to figures showing a large decrease in the US petroleum supply.

However, as of 20:00 UTC prices have fallen nearly two percent since yesterday and are back below $131. Over half of oil executives believe that the price will fall to US$100 a barrel toward the end of the year according to an Associated Press report.

The U.S. average retail price for regular gasoline also recently increased to a new all-time high, with the price going up 6.9 cents to 379.1 cents per gallon. This was the eighth consecutive week for the US average price to increase.Air France-KLM recently said that they would be challenged by the rising oil price. American Airlines has announced thousands of job cuts.

In addition, the U.S. has seen the cost of food rise significantly, an issue which food manufacturers and retail stores blame on the high price of fuel required for transportation. For example, CNN.com reports a 16.7% increase in the cost of hamburger buns, a staple item for many U.S. families.

Online Banks For Bad Credit Auto Loans 5 Things To Look For

By Everett Maclachlan

You may relate to the experience of thousands of others who are in need of a car but who cannot seem to find a bank who will approve them for an auto loan. If so, you already know the frustration a person can feel when they are not able to get behind the wheel of their own car just because their credit score is too low.

The fact is, a person’s credit score does not tell the whole story about whether a person is creditworthy. Rather, there are a number of factors that should be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, 99% of banks out there only look at your credit score when deciding whether they will approve your auto loan application.

The good news is that you can find online banks that will extend you a bad credit auto loan. The key is knowing how to look for the right lending bank, how to prepare for applying for a car loan, and how to carry out the application process.

If you are interested in finding online banks for bad credit auto loans, here are 5 things to look for:

1. Be sure they advertise themselves as a bad credit auto loan bank:

Banks are not all the same. If you just walk into a local bank branch to apply for an auto loan – and you have a bad credit score (say, a FICO score under 600) – you are likely to get rejected for a loan on the spot. However, if you look for a “bad credit auto loan” bank, you are much more likely to find one that will approve your application. These banks specialize in working with people who have less-than-perfect credit but who need an auto loan.

Do some online research and make a list of at least 5-10 banks who advertise themselves as bad credit auto loan lenders.

2. Find a bank that you can trust:

Banks come in all shapes and sizes. How can you know which type to choose? Well, you need to start by finding one that you can trust. And, remember, it is not necessarily the big banks that are the most trustworthy: there are countless stories each month about judgments in court made against many big-name banks, whereby the court has found the banks acting in inappropriate ways.

Once you have your candidate list of banks (see #1 above), do some research via online discussion boards to find out any positive or negative comments about them. Take careful notes!

3. Make sure they are FDIC insured:

Before applying with any lender, do a quick check with their website to make sure they are FDIC-insured. This is the sign that they are a legitimate bank with everything in order.

4. Check your credit score before applying for a loan:

Now, run your latest credit report to find out your current score; it may have changed since the last time you checked it. Also, be sure to make a note of any items you find there.

5. Shop to get yourself the best loan rate:

Now, it is time to start shopping. The biggest mistake many would-be auto loan borrowers make is to just apply to one bad credit car loan bank, get accepted, and move forward with that bank. But, doing so without shopping around further could put you in jeopardy of not getting the best-possible deal.

Look for these 5 things as you find the right online bank for bad credit auto loans.

How To Cut Calories}

How to Cut Calories

by

Aldrich alfred

Hey everyone, as you know cutting calories in order to lose weight can be really tough. There are many ways however of cutting calories, one such ways of losing weight can be achieve is while you are preparing your food. I came up with a routine that will cut calories while preparing food. Let’s talk about them now!

You should maintain a food diary for at least fifteen days and write everything that you consume in that diary. Now, everything means everything except for plain water. Even if you take your tea and coffee without milk and sugar, it should still go there. At the end of the day review that diary. The review will help you to understand how many unnecessary calories you have consumed, and how you can cut those unnecessary calories.

Find out your daily caloric needs and set a goal for your target daily intake. You can calculate how many calories you need to maintain your current weight easily online. Don’t set yourself up for failure by depriving yourself of too many calories too quickly.

The next step is on how you cook your food. If your going to cook your food in a frying pan with a whole bunch of grease, that is going to pack the calories. It’s actually healthier to cook your food on a grill rather then frying it if you can. This is because the grease drips down into the grill. It won’t contain as much fat and will contain less calories.

Most fresh whole foods are naturally low calorie. You can eat more for less calories. If you want to lose weight fast and never feel deprived – eat more fruits, veggies, and healthy grains. Plant foods take up space in your tummy so you feel satisfied and that makes you less likely to grab those high calorie fattening junky foods.

Unfortunately that is not how our bodies are programmed to work. Humans are a survival type of animal and have developed over time so that fat is stored for when it may be required. By not consuming enough calories our bodies think it is starving which makes it want to keep the fat already stored.

The strategy to eating more and cutting calories is to eat those foods that are normally avoided in the diet. These would be the fresh fruits and vegetables. Most people do not like the taste of these and do not find them satisfying. When you are hungry, eating some baby carrots does not give that full feeling that other foods give.

At your workplace, avoid unhealthy habits such as drinking too much tea, coffee or smoking. If you want to live a healthy and a balanced life then you need to make some changes at your work place like drinking 3 to 4 cups of green tea rather than going for a coffee or tea, avoiding junk foods, and drinking a lot of water throughout the day.
