Last Monday, the police of Barcelona, Spain killed Younes Abouyaaqoub at At Subirats, west of Barcelona. Before the kill, the police started international search for the van driver on the preceding Sunday. When policemans tried to arrest him, he faced them so the police opened fire. On Monday, a woman saw a man resemble Younes’s photo provided by police, and wear long sleeves on a hot 30°C day. The woman alerted police. Police sent a robot to remove the explosives in the body of the man to prevent the security of the policemans in case to be real and allow the identification of the suspect, after they shot the man and subsequently confirmed his identity. Abouyaaqoub was the driver of the van that trampled and killed 13 persons and injured more of one hundred persons in La Rambla of Barcelona.

When the police arrive to the place and they tried to arrest the fugitive, he opened his shirt and showed a fake suicide belt while he said in high voice “Allah is great” and he walked over 13 meters until policemans so the Mossos opened fire. Next, police used robots to remove a fake suicide belt from the man. The belt may have contained explosives. Then while a police helicopter was observing the scene from air, police approached the man and confirmed that there were no explosives. Then police confirmed the man’s identity and found he also had knives.

Younes was the twelfth suspect in the Thursday van attack at La Rambla pedestrian walk. Police suspected him as the van driver. Police had started looking for Abouyaaqoub in France and Catalonia on Sunday.

The Moroccan citizen Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22 years old, was being pursued by police in Catalonia and near the French border. He is the only one of the twelve suspects still at large. Authorities believe he was in France. Abouyaaqoub was suspected of being the driver of the van used in the attack. According to his family, he exhibited more religiously conservative behaviour over the past year and became became reluctant to deal with women. After finished the attack Abouyaaqoub had to stole a car to make his escape and the driver of this car was killed by him.

Abouyaaqoub was in Subirats, a city on west of Barcelona when he has found by the Barcelona police, Mossos, and they were shot and killed to the fugitive. The suspect of the attack in Barcelona was wearing an explosive belt and the police didn’t inmediately identify him as Abouyaaqoub. A robot was used to remove the explosives while polices did the identification of the man died. The fugitive aroused suspicion to a woman because he had inadeaquates clothes for a hot day. The area where Abouyaaqoub was killed is a rural area, with too little population and it has pine trees.

The attack took place at 17:10 local time, (UTC+0100). The van drove 500 meters along a pedestrian walkway, killing 13 people, injuring more than a hundred. The van driver fled on foot. Local police officers searched the surroundings and arrested two suspects, but the van driver they did not find was not arrested.

According to the local government, victims included citizens from 24 different countries, including France, Venezuela, Ireland, Peru, Algeria, China, Belgium (1 dead), Greece (1 injured), Australia (1 dead, 2 injured), Taiwan (2 injured), Hong Kong (1 injured), and Germany (unknown whether dead or injured). Many of the injured taken to the hospital were tourists unable to speak Spanish. The hospitals called for interpreters to assist in communication with the patients. An Australian seven-year old boy is among the dead. He was alive when he arrived at the hospital but did not survive.

Public transportation services had been stopped and the square of Catalonia has been closed to prevent further attacks and to allow emergency services reach any emergencies faster. The police, asserting safety concerns, have asked people not share images or data about the attack on the Internet.

According to a Spanish broadcaster RTVE, the local police arrested Driss Oukabir as a suspect, and his identification documents were found in the van involved in the attack. The local news outlet also said that the suspect claimed his identification documents were missing and might have been stolen by his brother. Local police refused to comment on the identity of the individuals arrested., Mossos D’Esquadra, denied this report. Via Twitter, Mossos D’Esquadra said they had arrested a suspect and the incident was investigated as a “terrorist attack”.–>

The Amaq news outlet, allegedly linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militant group, claimed ISIS was responsible for the, saying “The executors of the Barcelona attack were soldiers of the Islamic State”. They did not disclose the identities of the attackers. They alleged the attack was meant to target a coalition of countries at war with Iraq and Syria.

A few hours after the first disaster, another attack took place in Cambrils, near Tarragona. The Catalonian police reported they had shot the suspects, killing at least five and injuring one. The police authorities said that the two attacks were connected. In the Cambrils attacks the police killed another Abouyaaqoub´s relatives, a brother and two cousings, all people were using fakes explosives belts, the car used by the three persons overturned and while they exited, the vehicle the police shot and killed them.

This was Spain’s deadliest attack since 2004, when 192 people were injured during their commute on trains in Madrid.

Since the AutoTronics Taipei was held from 2006, companies from electronic and automobile-related industries steadily made their stages and a good complementary in this trade show.

Before the first holding in 2006, because of the establishment of Car Electronics Pavilion in 2005 TAITRONICS Autumn (Taipei International Electronic Autumn Show), it (the pavilion) ever became a hot topic in these 2 industries. And eventually, Yulon Group recruited their sub-companies grouping their own pavilion to showcase automobile parts, accessories, and applications.

Currently, automobile navigation, mobile entertainment, and road safety, were included in modern automotive devices. But in a keynote speech of TARC Pavilion, Jamie Hsu (Consultant of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of the China) pointed out several threats and opportunities on the automotive industry, his words also echoed a notable quote by Yi-cheng Liu (Chairman of Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association): “The automobile industry shouldn’t be monopolized by a company or its own industry. If this industry want to be grown up, it [the industry] should do more optimizations and transformations with the other related industries like IT and electronic.”

Although some participants like Renesas, Fujitsu, MiTAC, TomTom NV, and Agilent ever participated in Taipei IT Month, CeBIT, or Computex Taipei, but there were varied comments for participation on Computex 2008.

Renesas Technology, a participant of Computex 2007, won’t showcase in Computex 2008, but Fujitsu and TomTom both declared to participate in the 2008 Taipei IT Month.

Generally in the automobile industry, progressively conformed by the other industries, its success should depend on collaborations between different and similar industries because “not any company can do any monopoly in any industry” even though the automobile industry will become a “trillion industry” not only in Taiwan.

Yesterday afternoon, the Supreme Court of India asked Karnataka to release 12000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water from the Kaveri river till September 20 to Tamil Nadu after Karnataka pleaded not to release water. A week ago, the Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 15000 cusecs of water for ten days. Various cities in both states faced violent attacks.

At least five tourist vehicles with Karnataka registration plate were vandalised in Tamil Nadu. In Bangalore, protestors burned Tamil Nadu vehicles. A Tamil Nadu truck was stoned in Chamarajanagar. Pro-Karnataka activists attacked shops and Tamil people in Pandavapura. Police personnel were reinforced at the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border and it was later sealed.

In Tamil Nadu, people vandalised a hotel whose owner was of Kannada origin. They left a note in Tamil, warning Kannada people not to harm Tamilians. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha asking for the safety of Kannada people in Tamil Nadu.

Metro Service in Bengaluru were halted for 20 minutes in the afternoon. Police used lathi-charges to disperse crowds. One person was killed when police used gunfire while confronting vandals under section 144. Considering the security issues, private colleges and schools sent students home.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said 200 protestors were taken into custody. He also asked the protestors not to vandalise, saying, “Our appeal is if you are protesting, please protest peacefully. We know that injustice has been done to Karnataka. We have deployed sufficient amount of police force. We have got support from Centre”.

Mysore city didn’t face section 144, but considering the ongoings in Bengaluru, students of the National Institute of Engineering were asked to go home at 4:30 PM. They were also advised not to go in groups, as a precaution against the section 144 clause which prohibits large gatherings.

Bangalore City Police confirmed on Twitter that Section 144 was imposed which would last till September 14. The imposition took place at 5 PM IST. Farmers in Bangalore, Mandya, Mysore and Hassan blocked the roads while protesting the decision.

Kaveri begins in Karnataka, but a major part of the river is in Tamil Nadu. Karnataka has limited water supply for farmers and asked the Supreme Court for releasing only 1000 cusecs of water.

The Supreme Court has announced their next date of hearing on September 20.

Yesterday, the state government of Victoria, Australia announced their decision to trial self-driving vehicles on two of the state’s major connecting motorways, the CityLink and Tullamarine Freeway. The trial is to use autonomous vehicles from automobile companies including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The two-year trial is to have three phases.

The cars are to drive alongside commuters, but in public testing a driver is always to be present, as Victorian law requires drivers always keep a hand on the steering wheel. However, in occasional closures of the Burnley Tunnel, with no other drivers to endanger, the cars are to be tested with nobody in the vehicle.

Lane assist, cruise control, and recognition of traffic signs are in the trial’s first phase, expected to complete before the end of the year. This includes monitoring how the driver-less cars respond to road conditions, including lane markings and electronic speed signs.

“Victoria is at the forefront of automated vehicle technology — we’re investing in this trial to explore ways that this technology can be used to reduce crashes and keep people safe on our roads”, said Luke Donnellan, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety. He noted, “Ninety per cent of the fault of accidents is human error […] so we know that if we can take out human error we will have less accidents”.

Tim Hansen, Victoria Police’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that police had founded a project team to investigate how self-driving vehicles would change policing on roads. “Can we intercept vehicles more safely to avoid pursuits and ramming?”, he asked.

The trial is a partnership between the state government, Victoria’s road management authority VicRoads, owner of the CityLink toll road Transurban, and insurance company RACV.

Police forensic investigators in Canada continue the search for the body of eight-year-old Victoria Stafford, whom they now believe was murdered on the same day she was abducted, April 8, 2009 from her Woodstock, Ontario school.

Counselors have been providing support to students at Oliver Stephens Public School.

There have been two arrests made, one for the first-degree murder and abduction of Tori Stafford and the other person has been charged with being an accessory and abduction. The next court appearance is May 28.

Police and neighbours say that the parents of Tori may have been familiar with at least one of the abductors.

The search continues for the body of Tori as well as the rear seat of a vehicle connected with the abduction. The search area is around Guelph, and Fergus north east of Woodstock.

Police are seeking information about a blue 2003 four-door Honda which is believed to be blue with black spray paint on large portions of it. Investigators believe it to have been in the Home Depot parking lot in Guelph on the evening of April 8, the day of the abduction.

The grey cloth covered back seat from the above vehicle is missing and police are seeking to recover it. Police have been combing rural areas and scouring lake bottoms in the hopes of turning up more evidence.

“We continue to receive information on all different parts of the investigation and each piece of lead or tip, if you will, is being investigated as far as it can take us,” said Laurie-Anne Maitland, an Oxford Community Police Constable. “If I were her parent I would want to have that ounce of hope too until I knew 100 per cent. I think it’s the nature [of people to hope for] one possible little miracle … and it’s not [possible].”

Woodstock, the home town of Tori is located in the county of Oxford, and the search has spread out to the neighbouring county of Wellington. The city of Guelph is located about 42 miles (68 km) to the north east, and Fergus which is north of Guelph is about 57 miles (92 km) from Woodstock.

Yesterday, the United States Coast Guard went through with its plans to fire its cannons on the Ry? Un Maru, a Japanese ship that was sent out to sea last year by the tsunami that hit Japan.

The Ry? Un Maru has made a journey across the Pacific Ocean from Hachinohe, Japan to the Gulf of Alaska and ended up about 180 miles from the Alaskan shore. Coast Guard spokesman Paul Webb said sinking the vessel would be “less risky than it would be running into shore or running into [maritime] traffic”. The plan was for a Coast Guard cutter to hole the Ryou-un Maru with fire from a range of several hundred feet, and let it sink.

Prior to the sinking of the Ry? Un Maru, a Canadian fishing vessel claimed salvage rights. Webb said they would postpone their plans to sink the 164-foot Ry? Un Maru, to allow the 62-foot Bernice C to attempt to tow it; if the Canadians were not able to tow the abandoned vessel it would be sunk as planned.

After arrival the Canadians learned they could not tow the vessel and the Coast Guard proceeded with their plans. An HC-130 Hercules airplane observed the sinking of the Ry? Un Maru and warned ships in the area of a “live fire exercise”. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Anacapa firing a 25mm cannon sank the Ry? Un Maru, which had been scheduled to be scrapped prior to the 2011 tsunami.

Officials said they didn’t know how much diesel fuel the vessel, which could hold over 2,000 gallons, was carrying. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United States Environmental Protection Agency looked into this issue and came to the conclusion that sinking the ship and letting the fuel evaporate in open water was the best course of action.

According to Alaska state health and environmental officials, tsunami debris should not cause significant concern of radiation contamination to the shores of Alaska.

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate Darcy Richardson of Florida took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Richardson, 55, is a political activist that helped form the New Democrats in 1989 and founded the progressive Battleground Blog earlier this year. He is also a political historian, and has authored six books covering third parties and presidential elections, including A Nation Divided: The 1968 Presidential Campaign (2002). His current work, The Spirit of ’76: Eugene McCarthy’s Struggle for Open Politics, chronicles the late Democratic Senator Eugene McCarthy’s 1976 presidential campaign for which he volunteered. Richardson admires McCarthy, and served as manager for his 1988 presidential run. Recently, Richardson advised Brian Moore’s Socialist Party USA presidential campaign in 2008.

In addition, Richardson himself has sought political office, albeit unsuccessfully. In 1980, he ran for Pennsylvania Auditor General, and in 1988, vied for one of Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seats as a member of the Consumer Party. Last year, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Florida as the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Farid Khavari.

Richardson has criticized President Barack Obama’s policies for being too similar to those of former President George W. Bush. He hoped to convince several prominent progressives to challenge Obama in the Democratic primaries, but none were available to do so. Last month, Richardson decided to begin a campaign himself and announced through his Battleground Blog that he would challenge Obama in the Democratic Party primaries as a progressive candidate. So far, he has qualified for the New Hampshire primary in January and the Missouri primary in February. In an interview with the Independent Political Report, Richardson proclaimed his campaign slogan as “no fourth term for George W. Bush.”

Yesterday, Australia’s Prime Minister proposed his government might strip individuals of their Australian citizenship if authorities consider them involved in terrorist activity.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott stated, “As flagged by me in my national security statement in February, we will be legislating within a few weeks to strip dual citizens involved in terrorism of their Australian citizenship”.

The Coalition government’s bill aims to empower the immigration minister to revoke Australian citizenship of dual nationals suspected of involvement in terrorist activity.

Speaking of procedural for stripping individual citizenship, immigration minister Peter Dutton said he would take advice from intelligence agencies, such as the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

Dutton said, “We would gather as much evidence as was possible and we would make a decision whether or not we thought somebody was captured by what is a tight definition in relation to somebody committing an act of terrorism, an act preparatory to, fundraising or supporting a terrorist organisation or providing financial support or indoctrinating young people into the ways of one of these cults.”

This news comes as the Australian wife of Islamic State fighter Khaled Sharrouf, Tara Nettleton, attempts to re-enter the country with her children. Khaled’s seven-year-old son appeared in an internet image Khaled posted last year — in which the boy was holding a severed human head.
