Flooding closes highways in eastern Iowa, US

Saturday, June 14, 2008

Interstate 80 is closed in Cedar County, Iowa, east of the Iowa City area, due to flooding from the Iowa River and Coralville Lake. The flooding that has devastated cities in eastern Iowa has travelled downstream and is now threatening Iowa City and Coralville, both of which have issued evacuations for low-lying areas. Flooding on the Cedar River earlier filled Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with record-breaking water levels.

Interstate 80 is closed between mile markers 266 and 267, with a 281-mile long detour to get around it: Eastbound through traffic must leave I-80 at Des Moines and travel north along Interstate 35 then east to Dubuque via U.S. Route 20, where it can move south along U.S. Route 61 to return to Interstate 80 at the Quad Cities, with westbound through traffic following the opposite route. Local traffic is being allowed, since this shuts off a 150-mile stretch of highway.

Interstate 380 has also been closed, between mile markers 4 and 10, due to flooding from the Iowa River and Lake Coralville. This, combined with the flooding of the bridges across the Cedar River at Cedar Rapids, effectively cuts Cedar Rapids off from Iowa City; the only way between the two cities, normally 30 miles apart, is a 281-mile long detour that takes drivers through Des Moines.

The Cedar River at Cedar Rapids crested today at a record-breaking 31.1 feet, nearly 20 feet above flood stage. The Iowa River is expected to crest at Iowa City at 33 feet, 11 feet over flood stage and 4.5 feet over the record, on the morning of June 17.

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Spanish word “tortuga” means “turtle.” But in the wake of the New Orleans disaster, the USS Tortuga is helping other animals.

For nearly two weeks now, sailors from Tortuga’s repair division have devoted much of their time during this disaster relief operation to ensure the health and comfort of displaced pets.

September 4th, just after the ship moored to a pier at Naval Support Activity (NSA) New Orleans, HT1(SW) Mark Hanley and DC1(SW) Antony Graves gathered materials from the repair shop on board to construct a kennel along the levee. The facility they made soon became a popular shelter for the homeless animals of the storm.

Tortuga’s search and rescue team brought aboard more than 170 displaced citizens during this past week, providing them with food, water, medical aid and a place to sleep.

Tortuga’s makeshift kennel, named ‘Camp Milo & Otis,’ has housed as many as 90 dogs, eight cats, one rabbit, one guinea pig, a pair of parakeets and a flightless pigeon during the past week of operation.

Currently, there are 14 dogs that remain in Tortuga’s care, as many of the other pets have been taken to animal shelters in the area for extra medical attention, or been claimed by their owners upon arrival to Tortuga. The pets that Tortuga has registered have all been in the hands of professional veterinarians assigned to provide expert medical attention to the members of Camp Milo & Otis.

Dr. Kelly Crowdis and Dr. Latina Gambles, both from Tuskegee University and Christian Veterinary Missions, have treated many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment and broken bones at the Camp during the past week.

“The animals were bathed and assessed before physical interaction with the sailors,” said Dr. Crowdis. “They’ve been given immunizations, antibiotics and medications based on their medical needs.”

Dr. Crowdis added, “What these sailors have done on their own has been such a heart-warming thing. As an animal lover, it is so comforting to know that everyone cares about the animals in addition to the human lives rescued from the storm. I’m very pleased with these guys for taking the initiative to construct this kennel.”

Graves, Hanley and other members of their division have consistently bathed, fed, walked and given special attention to every dog, every day.

“We play with them,” said Hanley. “We take them out of their kennels to give them attention every day. And we’ll continue to do that for as long as our ship’s mission keeps us here.”

September 11th, the Agricultural Center at Louisiana State University donated supplies to “Camp Milo & Otis” in support of Tortuga’s efforts to help the animal victims.

”We got medical supplies, bowls, food, cages, leashes, collars, toys, cat litter and cleaning supplies from these people yesterday,” said Graves. “It’s nice to know that so many people out there have heard about what our ship is doing, and responded by donating so much to support us the best they can.”

A photo gallery of unclaimed pets is on the USS Tortuga’s web site.

As part of disaster plans, the Department of Homeland Security has also deployed Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams to provide medical care to pets and livestock, as well as provide any needed veterinary medical care for search and rescue dogs.

There are over 3,850 animals being sheltered around the state. If someone is looking for a pet they should contact their nearest Humane Society or go online to http://www.petfinder.org// . More information is also available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu//.

Why Have A Professional Perform Your Computer Installation?}

Why Have a Professional Perform your Computer Installation?

by

Lee Maggs

Computer installation can be a tricky process. There are all of those wires and plugs to understand, the drivers, the programs, the plugins to understand and install. Computer repair specialists do much more than just fix broken computers they work with you to get your new computer properly set up and installed so you can get to easily surf the web and do tasks that need to be done, like your daughters homework or Google directions to your in-laws house. Letting a professional perform your computer installation will keep your stress level down and let you relax and enjoy your computer afterward.

Computer

Plugging in all the wires and cables then connecting them in the right places can be a nightmare for someone who hasnt owned many computers and possibly has never installed one before. For example, getting the mouse and keyboard cords mixed up will result in neither of them working when you boot up your computer. These simple types of mix-ups can cause your stress level to immediately rise. Think about it your child is complaining about not already playing games online, your husband or wife has things to type up for work, and the mouse wont move! Professional computer specialists can come to your home and install all of your computer needs right in front of your eyes. Your PC, monitor, even your printer or scanner!

Programs

Along with the hardware of the computer are hundreds of different needs for software. Plug-ins, drivers, programs and other special software like Microsoft Office or Adobe Reader may need to be installed on your new computer before you can perform the tasks you need it to, like researching and typing up papers. A program called Java is needed to play most flash player games online, and you need the right drivers for your webcam to work with Yahoo Messenger. With so many different components needed, computer installations like these are much worse than the hardware ones, and can be ten times more confusing.

This is where letting a professional do his or her thing is worth it. These people have worked with computers for much longer than you have and know every piece of software you need and what each of them requires as far as drivers and plugins go. They can easily locate and download everything necessary for your familys needs and have it done before you can think about it.

Other Benefits

Another bonus to letting your local computer repair shop perform your computer installation is that any extra programs you need that youll have to buy are likely to be found cheaper at the shop. Computer repair shops often offer bundle packages of software needed for your computer at rates cheaper than you will find at your computer manufacturer or office supply store. For those places that dont offer them, however, the repairmen can often suggest to you which ones to buy and you can be assured that their advice isnt biased.

Increase Sperm By Avoiding These Deadly Mistakes

Increase Sperm Count by Avoiding These Deadly Mistakesrnrn-SmokingrnrnSmoking is not only deadly to your health and lifespan, the toxins and chemicals in tobacco smoke reduce sperm count, have a negative effect on sperm motility and create abnormal shaped sperm. It is not an easy habit to quit- i know myself how hard it is, but with the right support and medication if necessary, it is possible and well worth the effort.rnrnThe best ways to give up smoking include NRT, hypnosis, and acupuncture. It is a good idea to see your doctor to discuss the best method for you. rnrnAs a non smoker you will experience a increase in sex drive, bigger and harder erections due to the increased blood flow and a healthy increase in your sperm and semen volume.rnrn-AlcoholrnrnDrinking alcohol, especially in excess dehydrates your body causing your sperm count and sperm health to become low. Stop drinking completely to achieve the best results and increase your sperm count and-StressrnrnStress is another dangerous emotion which is detrimental to sperm health and sperm volume. A stressed body is not an ideal environment for your sperm to survive. some excellent stress busting techniques include meditation, deep breathing exercises, a change of diet from fast food to fresh fruit and vegetables and yoga. Also consider a trip to see your doctor if your stress levels are extremely high. rnrn-HeatrnrnFertility levels in men are lower in the summer and higher in the winter. Sperm becomes less active in extreme heat because it is not the ideal environment for it to be healthy and survive. This can seriously affect your fertility levels. Overcome this problem by avoiding spas, hot tubs, and saunas, take short showers instead of long hot baths and if you can handle a cold shower then that will be the ideal solution to keep your sperm active. Another thing to look at is tight fitting underwear and clothes which apply unnecessary heat to your testicles. Swap briefs for loose cotton boxer shorts and buy well fitted clothes that leave room to breath.rnrn-CyclingrnrnRiding a bike can have a negative effect of sperm production as the pressure on your testicles and the continuous bumping reduces sperm count.

Prosecutors drop assault case against former US VP Gore

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Former United States vice president Al Gore will not be facing assault charges due to allegations made by a masseuse in 2006, according to the Portland, Oregon district attorney’s office.

Molly Hagerty, 54, claimed Gore “sexually assault[ed] me in his [hotel] room.” Hagerty was called to Gore’s Portland hotel room to give him a massage. Hagerty said Gore pinned her down and “he kept trying to have sex with [her].”

Prosecutors closed the case, but after tabloid National Inquirer interviewed Hagerty they reopened the case. Hagerty refused to take a polygraph test.

Deputy DA Don Rees said there is “contradictory evidence, conflicting witness statements, credibility issues, lack of forensic evidence, and denials by Mr. Gore.”

Rees continued saying Hagerty and her attorneys were uncooperative in the investigation.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Raw Opals spend week preparing for London Games

Monday, May 21, 2012

Bruce, Canberra — This past week, an overstocked Australian Opals, the women’s national basketball team, prepared for the 2012 Olympic Games in London with a weeklong training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to be used to help narrow the nineteen member Opals squad down to the twelve that go to the Games, and provide players who rarely play together an extended period of time to play together in order to improve on court dynamics.

Camp started on Sunday, with players arriving from hometowns around Australia including Cairns, MacKay, Gladstone, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

The defending champions, the United States women’s national basketball team, are perceived as the Australian Opals’ main competitors. In the last three Olympic Games the Opals got silver medals. In each of these cases the United States got first place. Coach Carrie Graf said “thinking about the US too soon in inappropriate”, “Our focus is first and foremost, game by game winning our pool”. Amongst the Australian Opals’ competitors in the pool are Brazil, Russia, and Great Britain. Carrie Graf said Great Britain “will put up a fight on home turf” but there is a “world class [AIS] facility” and “world class medical support staff” supporting the team.

Australian Opal player Penny Taylor recently suffered injury from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, meaning she cannot play Olympics this year. In regards to the situation player Lauren Jackson, who is going into her fourth Olympics, said “you would never wish that upon anybody.” She says as a team they have to “move on, move through that” and “come together” to pick up their offence and defense. Despite the loss of one of their key players she says “we definitely have the talent there” and the team is all “on the same page.” She feels “pretty confident” and speaks of “very exciting” times ahead. Jenna O’Hea is going into her first Olympics with the team. She is still “pinching” herself and says she is taking it “day by day”.

A typical day at the camp might start with a 7.00am – 8.30am breakfast at the AIS Dining hall, before one and a half or two hours of court, gym, or swimming training. The middle of each day might consist of media meetings, medical checks, team meetings, and time to practise shooting. Around 12.00pm, the players meet to eat lunch and recover from the morning. The afternoon typically consists of more training, and some scrimmage games. Players usually finish around 7.00pm for dinner, and perhaps a massage.

The nineteen players in attendance this week at training camp were Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Rohanee Cox, Cayla Francis, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, Kristen Veal, Carly Wilson, and Hanna Zavecz. Basketball Australia has named fifteen players that are to attend the second phase of the camp: Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, and Hanna Zavecz.

A Personal Biography By: Shaun Sumner (Broke &Amp;Unemployed)}

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Shaun Sumner

In Nov. 2013, I went into a diabetic coma for almost two full days and had a stroke at the exact same time. Being sentenced and confined to a wheelchair for the first three months slowly returning back to life, I could barely walk, talk, dress myself, shower and needed help going to the bathroom too!

After deciding to wait a couple of months to see if I would get any better (only bouncing back to about 30%), I ended up filing for disability in Jan. of 2014. Being denied twice, I finally hired Morgan & Morgan as my attorneys for my disability claim. After finally receiving my disability hearings on Aug. 2016/Oct. 2016, the judge ruled me unfavorable, without cause, in Jan. 2017. My advocate from Morgan & Morgan stated “it was because of my age (43) years old and how they don’t typically give people my age disability”. So, needless to say I’m having to start the application process all over again!

So, after being out of work for three years, no income, not helping out with bills, not even able to go shopping for clothes, (having very slow motor skills) not being able to lift anywheres of about 20lbs. Can barely write any more. Now I’m looking for sedentary work which is really the only kind of work I’ve been doing my whole life anyways. Except for the occasional light construction jobs I had in between.

So, back in Jan 29, 2013, I decided to start a company called “Marketing Products And Services” doing internet affiliate marketing (not knowing what I was about to get into, being very analytical and dissecting everything I do to a T and originally planned to get rich quick, which never happened obviously, all while I was attending DeVry University under the”Network Systems Administration” in the Cisco Program). Now knowing and understanding that this is a business and like a store front it takes time to grow a business getting prospects to trust me by creating legible, in depth understanding detail (empathy if you will), helping people instead of being out for myself can be very fulfilling and rewarding all on it’s own. So, I guess you can say I’m trying to pick up where I left off in the internet affiliate marketing game. Really trying to create something from nothing.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy1DmGTKuH4[/youtube]

So, now I spend about 12 to 15 hours a day doing safe list marketing which is pretty much usually very time consuming ( without funds available to be able to upgrade). And if you’re broke like I am, then you to spend 12 to 15 hours a day signing up for safe lists just like me, trying to surf to gain credits to be able to promote your offer.

However, if you to are broke like me with the only lint in your pockets and no rattling of change in your pockets or the sound of crisp folding paper dollar ($$$) bills then you should go here ====>http://trackr.leadsleap.com/gwkn7h9gRITE NOW to sign up for my FREE offer with SFI! Swedish men suspected of nuclear plant sabotage released

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Two Swedish men that were arrested for being suspected of sabotaging the Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant in Sweden, have been released from police custody. Both men were arrested on Wednesday after traces of Acetone Peroxide, or TATP, were found on a plastic bag. TATP is also an organic peroxide which is sometimes used in making household cleaning chemicals.

“Both men have been cooperative but they deny any wrongdoing and waived the right to legal counsel. There was no legal ground to hold them any longer,” said Swedish police in a statement to the press. The police also noted that an investigation is ongoing.

The unnamed men, in their 40’s and 50’s, were arrested after security officials at the plant discovered traces of the explosive substance on a plastic bag inside a bag one of the men was carrying. Both men were contractors hired to do welding work in the plant which is owned and operated by Oskarshamnsverkets Kraftgrupp OKG.

Security detected the material on Wednesday during what was described by CNN as a “routine” security check. Authorities were called to the plant along with the bomb squad, who sealed off parts of the plant. Police believe it was on one of the man’s hands when it rubbed off onto the bag, but no bomb was found on the premises after an extensive search.

TATP is “very unstable, very sensitive to both friction and shocks,” said Swedish Defense Research Agency expert, Svante Karlsson. A small amount could cause serious damage to someone handling the material which is described as ‘Mother of Satan’. Would-be ‘shoe bomber’ Richard Reid used the substance in an attempt to blow up American Airlines flight 63 from Paris, France to Miami, Florida in 2001. The same substance was also used in the July 2005 bombings in London, England.
