How To Handle Your Inheritance Wisely

How To Handle Your Inheritance Wisely

by

Gia Deonne

The receipt or notification of an inheritance is often accompanied by various conflicting emotions. On the one hand, you are happy to except the inheritance, be it a priceless heirloom, an object rich in sentimental value, or a cash windfall. On the other hand, you are faced with the fact that you are receiving this inheritance because someone, and likely someone that you cared very deeply about, has passed on. Mixed in with these sentiments is the urge-in the case of a monetary inheritance-to splurge on something that you have always wanted, be it a new car, a cruise, or an upgraded home.

When faced with all of these feelings and emotions at the same time, you may begin to feel overwhelmed, particularly if you are smart enough to realize that you should be investing at least some of your inheritance, but arent sure exactly how to go about it. This article is written with the assumption that you have received (or have been named beneficiary) of a monetary inheritance, and has been written in order to provide you with suggestions for managing said inheritance in a wise fashion. Listed below are five tips for handling your inheritance.

Determine exactly what you currently have, and what you are owed. In most cases, dispersal of your inheritance involves more than just a check from the executor of an estate. Instead, you will likely receive separate monies from individual investments. Usually, you receive these monies on a stepped-up basis, which means that the cost bases of the assets are determined as of the date of death. You should also be aware that you wont necessarily receive all of the assets at the same time. For these reasons, it is essential to sit down with your financial planner and determine exactly what the monetary value of your inheritance is, how it is invested, and what the cost basis is. It is also important to know where the money is coming from, since different types of accounts (like Individual Retirement Accounts or Insurance benefits) have different protocol for withdrawing funds. Remember that this is your money, so dont be afraid to be proactive and ask for it.

Make a list of your short-term and long-term goals. Of course, it is very tempting to spend sudden windfalls on short term goals such as buying a car, sending children to private school, taking that cruise around the world, etc. What you need to consider before you splurge, however, are your long-term retirement goals, and whether you will be able to sufficiently meet them. This is where your financial planner can be an invaluable asset, as they can work with you to help you develop a plan that provides you with future financial security and hopefully a little splurge room as well.

Decide on exactly how much money you want to use for a splurge. Once your spending plan is in place, and you are able to see how much money is available for meeting your short term goals, the next step is to decide how much of it to use to purchase splurge items. Most experts recommend setting up a separate account for this money. This way, when it is gone, you will be less tempted and able to spend any more of your inheritance.

Put the equivalent of three to six months of regular expenses in an emergency fund: This is something that you and your financial planner should discuss, and it is a potentially life and credit saving strategy in case of any type of emergency. This money should be put into a short-term, fixed-money market account.

Develop an investment strategy for meeting your long term goals: With proper investing, the money that you have set aside to meet your long term goals can grow substantially. While there are many options for investing, here are three that you may want to consider:

Life Insurance: Your long term goals may include providing financial security for your loved ones, and if so, you should consider putting some of your inheritance into a permanent life insurance plan. Life insurance beneficiary proceeds are usually not subject to probate, and permanent life insurance can also offer many living benefits such as tax-deferred cash value accumulation, the ability to borrow from cash value on a tax-free basis, and the eligibility to earn dividends as declared by the insurance company, although it should be pointed out that dividends are not always guaranteed.

Annuities: Many people decide to place their inheritance money in annuities to grow long-term funds for the future. Annuities are flexible, tax-deferred investments that can be used to help achieve long-term goals and provide a source of retirement income. The money in an annuity accumulates tax-deferred, which means that you will only pay taxes on your earnings when the money is withdrawn. You should know, however, that any withdrawals made prior to age 59 may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty tax.

Bonds: There are many different types of bonds available, and your financial institution as well as you financial advisor, can help you decide which bonds are right for your investment purposes. US Government bonds carry some tax deferment benefits, while other types, like mortgage bonds, require higher investment yields but are generally considered more aggressive. The type of bond that you choose should also reflect your investment personality and be consistent with both your short and long term goals.

However tempting it may be to spend your entire inheritance in one fell swoop, remember that the person who provided this inheritance to you did so in hopes that you would use it both wisely, and in their memory. You owe it to this person, as well as to yourself, to spend your inheritance wisely, and your certified financial planner is the person most qualified to help you do so.

Massage Therapy: Part Of A Healthy Lifestyle

Massage Therapy: Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

by

Businesslocallistings Tampa

Massage therapy has been part of medicine for hundreds of years. Its original roots have not yet been identified but theories have revolved around Greek, Latin, and Arabic civilization. The word massage may have come from Latin word, massa which means to touch, handle, or squeeze. Wherever it may have come from, it undeniably has numerous benefits. People living in Bradenton, Sarasota, and the rest of the US have widely accepted the medicinal benefits of massage, which is why massage spas in these Florida areas offer numerous massage styles and techniques to suit the needs of their clients.

Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of massage therapy for treating patients with mild or severe ailments. Sarasota and Bradenton,FL massage spas have long adapted the idea of using massage therapy as a supplemental treatment for illness, and an alternative to drugs.

Sarasota, FL clinics who use therapeutic massage techniques allow their clients to choose from different kinds of massage, depending on their physical state. The beauty of massage therapy today is that it has become more specifically designed for different kinds of people. According to one massage spa in Sarasota, FL, massage therapy works with a foundation of different strokes and oils that suits the needs of different people, depending on what they do or what state of health they are in.

There are now more than 20 different kinds of massage techniques applied to patients though not all of these are offered by spas in Sarasota. The basic techniques provided by most Sarasota, FL spas are Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, pregnancy massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, and hot stone massage.

Swedish massage is the most popular technique requested by clients of Sarasota, FL spas. It uses long, slow strokes on the back, limbs, and head to relieve stress and muscle tension. A deep tissue massage is a technique used for injured patients, and sometimes, athletes. The strokes used for a deep tissue massage treatment is a bit similar to a Swedish massage except that it used greater pressure and faster strokes. You should only get this massage from a legitimate and professional massage therapist. Sarasota clinics often receive complaints of soreness after a deep tissue massage, but this is actually a normal after affect, so there’s no need to worry.

A pregnancy massage is a new technique that’s gaining popularity among residents of Sarasota and all over the country. A pregnancy massage targets the specific parts of women that experience the most stress, like their spine and lower back, hips, legs and feet, and head. Studies have shown that women who underwent the pregnancy massage treatment during the early stages of pregnancy had easier births and less negative symptoms.

A sports massage, as the name implies, is ideal for athletes or physically active individuals. Sarasota spas sometimes partner with sports teams so they could give regular sports massage treatments to the athletes before they get in a game or before training.

Reflexology, on the other hand, gives greater focus on special pressure points on the feet that are believed to have direct connection to vital organs. Reflexology is an ideal treatment for patients who want to balance their body’s energies and improve internal organ performance. This is also quite popular among Sarasota, FL residents.

Eva Hassett, VP of Savarino Construction Services Corp. answers questions on Buffalo, N.Y. hotel redesign

 • “Preliminary hearing against Buffalo, N.Y. hotel proposal delayed” — Wikinews, June 2, 2006
Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Monday, February 27, 2006

Buffalo, New York — Wikinews was the first to tell you that the Elmwood Village Hotel development in Buffalo, New York was to undergo “significant changes”.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a proposed project that would be placed at Elmwood and Forest Aves. in Buffalo. In order for the development to take place, at least five buildings that house both businesses and residents, must be demolished.

To confirm and to get more information about the changes, Wikinews interviewed Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarino Construction Services Corporation, the development company in charge of building the hotel.

Wikinews: The hotel proposal is being redesigned. Could you comment on that? What changes are being made? Are they significant?

Eva Hassett: The hotel has been resized as a 72-room, four story building. This is 10% smaller in number of rooms and a full story lower. We are also redesigning the facades in a way that will minimize the mass – more of a vertical feeling than horizontal. Different materials, windows, details. The smaller size of the hotel also makes the number of on-site parking spaces more appropriate and hopefully represents less of a challenge to an already difficult parking situation.

WN: Will you still be going before the city’s planning board as scheduled on February 28? Same for the Common Council?

Hassett: We will be on the Planning Board agenda this Tuesday morning but I do not expect that the Board will vote on the item that morning. I think we will be mainly explaining the new design and hearing input/questions.

WN: Will there be anymore public meetings?

Hassett: We would be happy to do one more big public meeting. We will be talking to Forever Elmwood about that on Monday (February 27, 2006). We would like to see if there is support for the new design and we also want to honor the public’s request for another meeting. I am hopeful that meeting can take place the week of March 6th.

WN: Is Savarino considering Mr. Rocco Termini’s design/proposal? If no, do you (Savarino) support/oppose?

Hassett: We are hopeful that we can build the hotel as redesigned. We think it would be a great addition to the Elmwood Ave. area, a good way for out-of-towners to see what Buffalo offers and a big help to the businesses there.

WN: Are you considering more time for the community to make a judgment?

Hassett: As I mentioned above, we expect to have one more meeting to get public reaction to the new design, and I think the Planning Board may want an additional meeting to make their determination. We do however, have constraints that will limit the amount of extra time. We still think it is a great project for the City and Elmwood; and we still want it to be something that the community wants as well.

So far, the City of Buffalo’s City Planning Board is still scheduled to meet at 8:00 a.m. (Eastern) on February 28, 2006 followed by the Common Council meeting at 2:00 p.m. on the same day.

Images of the design are not yet available. “We are working on the renderings this weekend, but I will likely have some early in the week,” stated Hassett.

Snow causes German travel woes

Sunday, January 31, 2010

Heavy snow combined with high winds has caused at least three deaths, with major travel disruption throughout much of Germany. Several motorways were closed, with long traffic jams on many others. As flights were delayed and rail travel cancelled, the police of North Rhine-Westphalia recorded over three hundred accidents, with a total of 42 injured people, during Friday night and into Saturday, with one death as a result of a man stepping out of his car and into the path of another after a motorway accident.

Cars were abandoned, and even the gritters were stranded. In the north of Germany, as much as 25cm of snow immobilised the transport network whilst police and other emergency services struggled to cope. Football matches have been cancelled across the entire nation, and ferry services to the Baltic Sea islands cancelled, with at least one completely cut off.

The Alster Lake in Hamburg froze over, prompting hundreds of citizens to skate across it, in what meteorologists say happens just once a decade.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Anti-poverty group splatter B.C. premier’s office with paint

Saturday, February 23, 2008

The Anti-Poverty Committee (APC) has taken full responsibility for four people splattering latex paint on the front of British Columbia premier Gordon Campbell‘s office in Vancouver Thursday afternoon. They tried to break into the office and frightened staff.

The four were described as three women and one man wearing white painter suits and face masks. One was recording the event on video. A constituency assistant said they put posters on the outside of the building. They splattered the front of the building with paint.

The paint represented three official colours of the Olympic flag; yellow, red and green.

“I think the activists should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said the premier. “Frankly, this is about seeing their faces on television.”

Attorney General of British Columbia Wally Oppal spoke out against the group: “It’s disturbing when you have people like these, who are continually intimidating law-abiding citizens and I think the public is getting sick and tired of this group.”

The group vandalised and broke into Campbell’s office in Vancouver last May when they posed as a flower delivery service and quickly ransacked his office breaking windows and throwing pictures, office documents, and various other items. They also threw yellow paint and put posters on the Olympic Clock in downtown Vancouver last April.

They believe that poor citizens are losing their homes due to the money spent and developments near the city on preparation for the long-awaited 2010 Winter Olympics.

“Why we went to the premier’s office was to protest the budget, the lack of any real money being spent on what poor people need, you know, housing, not hotels but real social housing,” said David Cunningham, a spokesman for the group. The budget has “billions of dollars compounded in surplus at the expense of poor people’s lives,” he told the CBC.

Cunningham said the group will not stop the “criminal acts” until the government’s budget surplus is spent on social housing and on the citizen’s.

“Just after 2 p.m. a group of people attended the premier’s office … and threw paint on the exterior of the building,” said Const. Jana McGuinness of the Vancouver Police Department. “This is a criminal charge. This is mischief, so if charges are warranted we’ll definitely be laying charges.”

No arrests were made as the four managed to leave before police arrived.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Prince Laurent of Belgium testifies in marine fraud case

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

Prince Laurent of Belgium, the youngest son of King Albert II of Belgium, has been questioned last night by the federal police and is attending today’s court session in Hasselt in a marine fraud case that has gripped Belgian media since last December. He arrived in a Smart car and was accompanied by his lawyer and former politician Fred Erdman. The case turns around funds of the Belgian Navy that have been used to beautify the Prince’s villa in Tervuren. The Prince is expected to testify this afternoon.

In total, 2.2 million was supposedly diverted from the marine’s purchasing services using false invoices. Roughly € 185 000 was allegedly used to paint the Prince’s villa, install lights in the garden, for the purchase of carpet and furniture, and for his secretariat and for animal clinics the Prince supports via his Foundation. Twelve marine officers and contractors are being accused of document fraud, collusion, bribery, embezzlement of government money etc. and could face 10 years in prison. The money was part of the budget that wasn’t spent at the end of the year, and which would flow back to the government if the army didn’t spend it.

The Prince, who is also an officer in the navy, is being treated only as a witness in this case, there have been no charges against him. The Attorney General in Hasselt Marc Rubens has said that there are no elements in the investigation that point to the fact that Laurent was aware of the affair, however several accused have contested this in the press. Technically, the villa is not the property of the Prince himself, but of the Royal Gift, which manages the real property of the Royal Family.

During his interview by the police last night, Prince Laurent stated that he needed funds to renovate his villa, and that Noël Vaessen, his adviser, told him the Navy could help him. The Prince stated that he thought it was legal, and that he had no reason to doubt his adviser.

Ex-Colonel Noël Vaessen was an adviser of the Prince between 1993 and 1999. Vaessen has declared in the media during the last month that the Prince actively participated in the fraud, and that he fears a cover-up. He said that the Prince was a demanding party in the operation, and that “he knew that we were arranging things to make his life and his work as comfortable as possible.” According to Vaessen, the Prince was in need of money to support a royal lifestyle, and “didn’t even have enough money to buy food.”

In 2001, Vaessen was discharged with honour from the army “for medical reasons”, but Defence Minister André Flahaut is investigating if there was no agreement to give him his pension in exchange for the fact that he wouldn’t incriminate the Prince. Vaessen also accused the Prince of other things, such as racing against the high-speed train TGV on a French highway. He has also incriminated Admiral Herteleer. Captain Johan Claeys, one of the accused, studied with the Prince and worked at the facturation services of the Navy in 1998 and 1999. One of the accused contractors, Marc Luypaerts, has told the press that the judge responsible for the investigation in Hasselt had forbidden him to speak about Prince Laurent.

Laurent’s status as a Prince has several judicial consequences for the trial. In Belgium, it’s against the law to incriminate the Royal Family during a trial. Also, the Prince is protected from judicial pursuit because he is also a Senator by law. Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx has issued a Royal Decrete, which the King has signed while on holiday in Napels, which would make it possible for Princes to testify in a trial.

However, Public Prosecutor Erwin Steyls has chosen to have Laurent interrogated by the police last night in Hasselt. This was the first time during the last six years of the inquiry that the Prince was questioned. Today in the court, the Prosecutor defended the act of having him questioned outside the trial, saying that there were several procedural issues. First, the subpoena for the Prince wasn’t issued in time to be legal. Second, the details of the protocol to hear the Prince in court were not explained in the recent Royal Decrete, making it worthless -something Minister Onkelickx denied. Thirdly, nobody can be forced to testify against himself, and if the Prince were to make false statements under oath, he could only be sued for perjury. However, the court has decided to let him testify anyway this afternoon.

Quote

Nobody is above the law and the Justice Department must be able to complete its task in full independence. When the courts find embezzlements, it seems fair to me that they would be compensated by anyone who profited from them.

During the last month, the case has caused a several spin-off discussions in Belgium. One of the surprises during this period was the King’s Christmas Message, in which he referred to the case. The regional governments are now investigating and discussing their donations to the IRGT/KINT, an environmental organisation supported by Prince Laurent. But there is also an ongoing debate over the position of the Monarchy in Belgium. Some politicians are suggesting to limit the role of the Monarchy, and other think that only the King and Queen, the Crown Prince or Princess and the widow(er) of the King or Queen should receive state funding.
